Why do you think users can't install binary distributions instead?

That doesn't help with new architectures! This seems an obvious point, am I missing something?

A new architecture is missing gcc/g++, right? So, my claim is that that is more of a disaster, than not being able to compile a cross compiler to a supported platform on that new system, and that crossing from another system is generally no more hard than bringing it up on the new system.

Of all the times you've ported gcc to a new platform, what percentage of the time would it have been harder to cross than to bring up on the target system? What were some of the issues that made it hard?
