Right. That's the start of the egcs/gcc schism, which was healed in 1999.
Before that, gcc had a private, by-invitation-only development list,
and the archives of that list were not published. After the
reunification, what was egcs become GCC and the name change to "GNU
Compiler Collection" occurred.
