bootstrap fail on alphaev5-unknown-linux-gnulibc1

Hi,
bootstrap of the 98/1/22 snapshot fails with:

on an alphaev5-unknown-linux-gnulibc1. It does fine with the 
1.0.1 release. Did I miss something? 
this is RH 4.2.
