The LITERAL relocation truncated to fit linker error is a well-known
limitation in the linker shipped with RH4.2. It only allocates a
single GOT segment, so when the application gets big enough it overflows
the segment and you loose. f771 hovers about that boundary and fails
or not one release to the next depending on what changes.
RH5.0 has a newer version of the linker that fixes this deficiency.
Note that due to a bug in the assembler shipped with RH4.2 it is a
delicate thing upgrading just binutils. It is much easier to do the
whole system.
