I'm a bit rusty on my already miniscule autotools knowledge,
but why can't we use appropriate AC_DEFINE macros to move
these to their "proper" place? Why should we maintain
a separate config.h.in?

That at least seems to be the "proper" way of doing
things according to the info manuals for autoconf.
