This was fixed on mainline by

If I add that patch to the gcc-3.4.x sources then it can correctly
compile and run 173.applu. I haven't tried running the full suite yet
with this patch. I will try that later.
First, I will do the necessary testing to get this patch added to the
gcc-3.4.x release branch, so that this will be in the next gcc-3.4.x
release.
