Isn't java/libjava enabled by default?

No, not on cygwin.

Have you tried to build libjava and the java comopiler as well?

*** This configuration is not supported in the following subdirectories:
     target-libffi target-boehm-gc target-zlib target-libjava
    (Any other directories should still work fine.)

"configure --enable-libgcj ..." does the trick.
