That's because the compiler has nothing to do with it.  :-)

Whether a process can generate a core dump is controlled by resource limits.
The commands to examine and change resource limits depend on what shell
you use; for sh-family, use "ulimit", and for csh-family, use "limit".

For more information, read the man page for your shell, or ask your system
administrator.  Many sysadmins turn off core dumps to save on diskspace,
because many users don't know what they are and forget to delete them.
