I checked up on this and found that the configure script worked fine.
It tries a small assembler program for the feature, finds it fails,
and then doesn't set a flag.
My opinion is that the flag is not tested before the feature is used.
I think this is in config/i386/*
This sounds like quite a big bug for the Linux/i386 community.
I suspect not all of us run the latest binutils.
