XFree86 3.3.2/egcs 1.03a on linux-alpha: "no screens found"

My alpha linux box doesn't seem to build X properly with egcs 1.03a.
The gcc which came with it builds X just fine, but when I build with
egcs, xinit gives the attached error. This may be an egcs bug and may
be an X bug, but wanted to let both of you know, to put it in the
relevant faq.
I reran RedHat Xconfigurator to recreate the (also attached) XF86Config,
but still got this error.
(I also noticed that xinit is looking in /usr/X11R6 for the fonts-
that's where the old X distribution was, though I renamed it to
X11R6.old and symlinked it to X11R6.3- even though 6.3 is in my path and
6 isn't...)
I just rebuilt X with the old gcc and it worked just fine.
History/background:
My alpha linux box arrived from Microway two days ago with no X header
files, no emacs, missing /usr/share files, and numerous other problems-
some detected and others yet to be. (They also forgot to ship the
RedHat distribution in the box- I was unfortunately not my usual civil
self when I reported these problems to them...)
So, I decided to download the X header files for 3.3.1, the version
which came with the machine. Then I figured, since I'll have to 'make'
to get the header files anyway, why not just get 3.3.2 and rebuild the
whole thing. So I did, and it worked, happy ending, so far.
Then I got Mesa and tried to build it. But one of the compiles led to a
"cc1: internal compiler error" (I don't remember the exact word order),
so I decided to download and build egcs, and lo and behold, Mesa
compiled. However, it didn't link properly with X- there was one
missing function, whose name I found in one of the X library functions
in one of the -L directories. So Adam figures, if egcs is good, and the
function exists, maybe gcc compiled the X libs badly- let's rebuild and
see if it works better.
I rebuilt, quit X and tried to xinit, and got this error. Oh no!!
So, I just finished rebuilding X with gcc, and it works fine.
I'll try to track down the Mesa problem and report it to them
separately.
