Is there a recipe for getting an automake that works correctly with

Using redhat's automake 1.4 (hacked to remove the "file can't be in a
subdirectory" error) works, but the resulting is not
formatted as well as the one in cvs.

Using the latest cvs automake I get:

$ automake 32: `AM_PROG_LIBTOOL' is obsolete, use `AC_PROG_LIBTOOL'
automake: Java source seen but `GCJ' not defined in
automake: required file `../depcomp' not found
