GNU CC searches for a program named `as' in various directories;
if the program it finds is GAS, then it runs GAS.
Obviously, /usr/ccs/bin/ is searched first on SunOS (before
$PATH?). --with-gnu-as and --with-gnu-ld seems to be obsolete. The
configure script seems to test the features of each program, at
least for as. This can probably be regarded as a bug in the
manual.

The garbage collector couldn't find the stack base. This line can
be found in Boehm's changelog:
- Fixed Solaris 2.7 stack base finding problem.
