PostMortem: Is there a good platform for gcj?

After several days frustrating days, I can't get libgcj to even
compile on RedHat 5.2 or 6.0, which I had naively assumed were pretty
common/standard systems. Now it occurs to me that might not be the
case. (sourceware.cygnus.com runs a bsd variant, I guess.) Assuming
I ever get the brick-dust out of eyes and want to try again, what OS
would I have the best luck with? (feel free to tell me I'm going
about this all wrong, but I don't know any other approach when every
path just leads to another bug after 30 minutes of compiling.)
