This is, as you know, a linker issue.

The unsupported symbol binding is most likely STB_GNU_UNIQUE. Support
was added to gold 2009-12-04, which was after the 2.20 release. I don't
know what patches Debian has included in their release, but you most
likely need a newer version of gold.
