I don't think it's unreasonable to have GCC require a specific 
assembler version or bugfix, it does this on numerous other platforms 
(Linux, AIX, Solaris) or has done so at some point in the past.  The 
question of which OS you have installed is orthogonal to the question 
of which development tools you have installed.
