Bugzilla: Reporter filing bugs to oneself

I tried to assign a bug that I reported to myself, but I got this error
from Bugzilla:

"You tried to change the Status field from UNCONFIRMED to ASSIGNED, but
only the owner or submitter of the bug, or a sufficiently empowered
user, may change that field."

This is a little strange, as I am in fact the submitter of the bug.  Am
I doing something wrong, or is this error message inaccurate?
