Well, cfront demonstrates that almost anything can be done with a
separate text translation tool. :-)

In any case, I originally proposed this as a documented addition to
GCC, irrespective of how it's implemented. So let's finish thinking
about this in terms of whether and how the user manual is going to
change, before deciding about the best way to write the code.
