Hmmm... that may explain some of my problems.

On the Opteron (gentoo-amd64) box (where I see thousands of failures), 
I'm running:

Expect version is       5.37.1
Tcl version is          8.4
Framework version is    1.4.4

Whereas on the Pentium 4 (debian sid) box (where the testsuite works):

Expect version is       5.39.0
Tcl version is          8.3
Framework version is    1.4.4

I'll take a look at getting a fresher Expect for the Opteron.
