While (d) is certainly desirable, there is an even more
short-term solution that would probably benefit mainline
as well: a SAVE_EXPR shouldn't have been created for a
simple non-volatile DECL.
I don't think that's right. You could have an object whose size depends on
a non-volatile variable and then modify the variable before one use of
the size. The SAVE_EXPR forces proper evaluation in that case.
