Which seems like a good place to bring up a related point:

I know I don't really contribute to gcc at all other than trying to answer
ancillary questions that come up that I know something about (rare), but
as long it doesn't make life any worse for the GCC maintainers, it's
really, really cool when as much as is reasonable of the release and
maintenance process is on public lists that people like me can lurk.

I follow this list in part because I'm very interested in GCC, but also in
part because I'm very interested in free software development in general,
and I've learned a great deal about the technical, social, and political
aspects of maintaining free software packages just by being able to
listen.  Some of those lessons I've even been able to apply to other
free software projects, like INN.

I think it's really, really cool that you all let people like me listen in
on the discussions and learn.  It's *greatly* appreciated.
