I do want to help, and in fact already have spent considerable time 
trying
to produce a C test case for this bug and in general trying to 
understand
the handling of PIC on Darwin. Unfortunately, there is no real 
documentation
for the code in question, especially not at the design level. Also, the
fact that the binutils Apple are using are derived from truly ancient 
GNU
binutils, make me even more reluctant to delve into this problem.

Indeed, I agree with Zack that it would be best if Apple switched to
current object file formats and tools. I don't quite understand the
decision to not do this.
