The branch isn't quite "live" yet, but I'm working hard
on it.  I had to resolve various conflicts since I last
worked in the 3.4 source-base.  Things mostly work now.
The main issue now is figuring out whether to split up
the check-in into multiple patches, and writing appropriate
ChangeLog entries!
