But we do know that 3.1 is broken, see for example PR 7090.

My comment in that PR saying, "this should be fixed for 3.1.1" was written
after I'd applied the change to the branch.  If there is a different patch
that /also/ went in the branch after 3.1 was released, then I will happily
revert my change.

Otherwise this seems to be a big step back, but of course I'll still revert
it if you want.
