gcc problems with HP-UX 10.2

Nope.  As I found out in private e-mail, the problem was that CFLAGS
would expand to something containing +O1 +s +fpic.  Not exactly the
kind of switches GCC is supposed to accept.  It took them as input
files, and complaining for having too many of them.
