I have built and installed gcc-2.95.3 in place of the compilers which
came with my linux distros, and am pleased with the result.  Actually,
you can still select the original version with the -V option, if you
create the necessary symlinks.  You should install all compilers which
you will use; you have no choice about C.  Since you use C++, you may
need further research as to whether you require newer features than
those in 2.95.3 and can accept attendant bugs.
