I have been compiling 2.2.x kernel with gcc 2.96 for months now:

# cat /proc/version
Linux version xxxxxxx (root@nfs.var.com) (gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.0)) #1 SMP Sun Oct 8 15:47:45 PDT 2000

But I do have 2 small patches:
