memory exhausted

It may be a bug, but not necessarily in the compiler. When linking
runs out of memory, it is most likely the linker that fails, which is
not part of gcc (instead, gcc assumes it is already there and invokes
it).

Unfortunately, you did not say what operating system you use, so it is
hard to guess what the problem is.

Again, complain to whoever provided you with the linker. However, if
it is short of memory, it may suffering from thrashing into swap
space. Maybe you need to complain to the OS vendor then, as well :-)
