obstacks need to stay -- consider languages like Ada, Pascal, Modula-3. I've already gotten obstacks out of the Ada front end. I agree we can't remove them any time soon, but I think we can in the not-too-distant future since if the front-ends are being maintained at all, they can make that change: it's not *that* much wor.
