Personally, I also find this kind of thing annoying, but I don't think
it's something that I (as the site maintainer type dude) am going to
dictate to any mailing list.  I can understand why some people will do
it--like most active people here, I get 5-10 spam notes in my personal
mail box a day and they want to avoid that.

If the gcc maintainers came to a decision that they wanted to reject
this type of header, then I'd be willing to look in to it (or Jeff could).

I suspect this issue would be even more contentious than the "Reply-To:
set to the whole mailing list" or "[GCC] should be added to Subject:
lines" type decisions.  I've never found discussions about these issues
to be productive--they both just annoy the heck out of some people and
their lack of being there annoys others.  You just have to leave the
decision up to some project owner (or steering committee in the case of
gcc) and live with their decision.

You could always implement something with a procmail recipe to reject
mail with an invalid From:, or put it in a special wankers mail file
or something.
