egcs 1.1b sparc Solaris 5.5.1 optimsation failure

I've just built the 1.1b release and a load of the optimisation tests have
failed!
I am running Solaris 5.5.1 on a Sparstation 5. The assembler is from
binutils 2.8.1 as is the ld.
Are these failures expected?!
I have had a brief look at 980506-2.c and confirm that under a debugger it
works with -O1 but appears to optimise the *ip=0 out of existance at -O2.
