collect2 and shared library locations

Hi,

under NetBSD Unix the directories where shared library objects may be
are controlled by the ldconfig(8) utility, which in turn reads the
/etc/ld.so.conf file for a list of directories to search in. For
example, I can place a shared library in /where/ever, add this
directory name to the config file, call ldconfig and immediately ld(1)
will find the library.

It appears, though, that collect2 does not use this mechanism, but
wants the directory list to be set in $LD_LIBRARY_PATH. Is there any
chance to remedy this? Or am I doing something wrong?
