Indeed that is a very common problem. You might want to have a look 
at the FAQ at http://egcs.cygnus.com/faq.html , or more specifically
http://egcs.cygnus.com/faq.html#autoconf/bison++ . 


BTW, Jeff, I noticed that egcs/INSTALL/{FAQ,faq.html} is not up-to-date;
it claims to be from December 2nd.
