excessive memory consumption

running the same thing on a mips-sgi-irix6.2 system gives:

	tdeque.cc:101: virtual memory exhausted

for an 500 MB virtual memory setup. compiler is

	gcc version egcs-2.90.10 970924 (gcc2-970802 experimental)
