excessive memory consumption

egcs-970924 on i586-linux hit over 100M before I killed it.  I haven't
tried it on my silly graphics but I'm sure it will do the same thing.
I've got [access to] a Sun with 1.5GB of memory if people want to test
code and not bring their own machines to their knees.
