SCO GCC problem

I downloaded the latest binary distribution of GNU GCC from the SCO 
Skunkware site, www.sco.com.skunkware/osr5/devtools/gcc/gcc-2.95.2-
VOLS.tar.

I tried to compile a very simple C program and got the following error:

gcc: installation problem, cannot exec 'as': No such file or directory.


I searched the whole system for a file named "as" and didn't find anything!
Is there something else I need to install to get the gcc compiler working?
