Information on Compiler Optimization

Hi to all

I'm searching Information about how work the optimization beacuse
for my Master Thesis i have make the optimized a Program, so that i
have to write down my work and i wish to write down about the
optimization
My problem is that i have only the info that is in the man of gcc and is
hard to understand for me what the compiler make when i use -O1 -O2 ...
etc

Can help me giving me or a web site where i can learn it or some book or
anything also you think is good
