Eh?  Please undo this.

Last time I checked, this made virtually no difference for this PR, and 
PR 8361 most certainly does not depend on this one (in fact the test 
case for this PR always compiled fine with g++, only the C front end got 
stuck on something.  I haven't figured out what the difference is 
unfortunately).
