large numbers of alpha c++ test failures

Sometime recently the C++ front end was changed such that it
now reports

    streambuf.h:222: warning: cast to pointer from integer of different size

for

    operator void*() const { return fail() ? (void*)0 : (void*)(-1); }

which doesn't seem right. Certainly the C compiler does not warn for
casting constants to pointer values.

Because of that we get failures for a whole passle of tests. Probably
most of the 105 failures are due to this.

There are is also a correct error for g++.brendan/code-gen2.C, line 12.
