It sounds like you don't have the original compiler installed. You
need to have a compiler to compile gcc with. As David said, you can
get RPMs of 2.95.1 for this system.
powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu is a correct configure name for this system.
gcc-2.95.1 works on my G3 powerbook just fine.
