--with-as=xxx

Hello!

The "--with-as=" option to configure is not rejected, but is not
supported either.

I gave a prefix to an intermediate installation tree, from where I
install through soft links to the final installation tree, using an
installit script. This has among others the advantage of helping to
keep track of what belongs to what, and to allow quick
deinstallation/reinstallation.

Doing so however, "as" is not found from the "prefixed" tree, and I
could check that the path given through "--with-as=" is not honored by
the intermediate compilers (cc1, cc1plus, xgcc...).

To install egcs-1.1.2 onto HP-UX 10.20, hppa1.1, with this system, I
had to install egcs first, to add soft links to gnu as deep into my 
intermediate installation tree, in a path reported by:

  gcc --print-search-dirs

and to reinstall egcs from scratch.
