That wording was identical in Fortran 66.  Nothing was stated explicitly
in Fortran I, as far as I can see.  It was also forbidden in IBM Fortran
IV.
So it has been illegal for over 40 years, at least :-)

It's fairly easily fixable by using a simple preprocessor - e.g. a
Python
script.

It was easy to fix, along with a couple of other unique extensions (like
INTERNAL FUNCTIONS).  What I find amazing is the subtle differences
between the compilers (and coding styles); almost every time I handle a
'dusty deck' I learn something new.

Once again, gfortran team...excellent product.  About 100K SLOC, took a
little over a day to get it all compiled.
