That wording was identical in Fortran 66.  Nothing was stated explicitly
in Fortran I, as far as I can see.  It was also forbidden in IBM Fortran IV.
So it has been illegal for over 40 years, at least :-)

It's fairly easily fixable by using a simple preprocessor - e.g. a Python
script.
