Ok, that makes sense. I was not starting from a clean directory. I just 
finished compiling from a clean directory and now it works.

It's probably that patch from Rainer Orth. I haven't updated + compiled 
gcc in a couple of weeks. Two weeks ago I was on vacation and last week 
I was busy with a research project. The modest time I spent on GFortran 
went into a failed attempt to clean up gfc_trans_allocate. I wanted to 
move much of that function into a separate function but that turned out 
to be more tricky than it sounds. All in all, I probably missed Rainer's 
patch.
