libgfortran.so problem

I did a search on Google for my error message, and turned up:

it seems someone else has hit this problem last April and Tobias said
" I have not the slightest idea what goes wrong" in this case
(libgfortran.so: file not recognized: File format not recognized.  I didn't
see any further replies, has this bug been solved?  I am running SUSE Linux
10.1, and actually gfortran works ok in 32 bit mode (on my 64-bit Linux
system), but I get this error message when I run gfortran on a trivial
program in 64-bit mode, unless I use -static, which causes other problems.
