Is GFortran stable enough to actually use?

Yes.  I think we are in the proverbial "hurry up and wait"
stage.  Mark Mitchell, the release engineer, wants to get 
the (major) regressions on trunk down to 100 before branching.
It was down to 104 last weekend, but last night it was up to
117, again.
