It does make debugging a bit difficult, doesn't it?  It's like the 
segfaults that disappear in dbg sessions :-)

If you could remove eiher one or the other part of the patch, that would 
be a start. My gut intuition tells me that the part in symbol.c is the 
suspect,although I cannot see why.
