gfortran build / ../include and config* links

This is probably more a question for gcc than gfortran specific, but
there'll be someone out there who KNOWS:

Everytime I upgrade my gcc installation (update or purge and new 
download) the make process stops (it cannot find include files and 
config files)  Those are in its parent directory!

in gcc/build-i686-unknown-linux-gnu/ I run

ln -s ../include include
ln -s ../config* ./

and the make process continues successfully.  Am I missing something?
