So anyone else have a comment?

libstdc++ is clearly missing functionality in many distros, and it
would be nice to add it.  As has been mentioned in this thread, in
many cases, this is possible without changes in libstdc++, and without
overhead, by simply changing the configure options used, and not
relying on the defaults.  I'm proposing to do this in debian, and so
far, there's no indication that this would cause any problems.
[Paolo, if you know a reason, please say it.]

Of course it would be nice to have it do the right thing by default
when possible too, and that's going to require at least a more clever
configure script.
