Eeeek. I forgot a paragraph here.
Wanted to point out that when working with such alphabets, we'd probably
be using some flavor of Unicode, and the letters would not only have their
own representation (so that '+' need not be borrowed fir extra duty), but
that the regular expression engines on such systems are generally aware of
the alphabet. So in this case, '\w' in a Bantou language would include the
'+'-like symbol, and actual ASCII '+' would still be left out of the match.
