Yes, it is an inconvenient decision to say the least.
It certainly wasted a lot of my time, and I think it will waste the
time of a lot of other developers in the future.

GNU Classpath has an implementation of 'jar' written in java.
This will show up in gcj eventually.

We worked out a compromise here.  fastjar is now hosted on savannah.
